June 2009 Almost 2 years have passed and I know Ben will be here forever. Nobdy but John can handle him and he still feels like he needs to escort me out of the room with barks and snarls. Well, so be it! If Ben can love one person, he is fine right here at the Dog House. If by some miracle someone falls in love with a challenge like Ben, we will write another chapter to his story. The Beginning - Ben arrived at the Dog House on Tuesday 8/31/2007 in a big old crate. He was frightened and just wouldn't come out. The crate had been wired all around to keep it together so I couldn't just take off the top - and I sure wasn't going to stick my arm in there! Ben warned me right away that he had been pushed as far as he was going. Ok, I thought. I'll just leave the door open and give him time. Well, dinner time came and no Ben. I added a bowl of warm stew beside the water bowl at the door of his crate. I stepped way back and the smell of food soon brought him up to the front of the crate. He snarled at me but quickly began to eat the stew. But he didn't leave the crate. Wednesday was a hectic day at the Dog House with electricians working everywhere the dogs needed to be. They didn't bother Ben any. He stayed in his crate. In my bathroom. In my shower. Sigh. I delivered more chicken stew for breakfast. I laid a trail with Cheerios from his crate across the room. Every other Pap dropped by to say hello and eat cheerios, but Ben was not even tempted. Night came and so did more stew. Thank heaven, Ben did not go potty in the crate. And he did spend the night in it! By this morning I had enough! In a bold move I unceremoniously dumped him out of the crate in the dog room. He quickly ran under one of the shelving units and there he stayed. I was amazed to see that the other dogs barely paid any attention to him. After all, he had already been here almost 2 days. They had all smelled him and knew he was there - so why bother! Tonight, Ben ate his stew in the kitchen. When he was through, he climbed up the back of my big leather office chair and fell asleep behind my back. The hard part is over - he is a fool for my stew! But he thinks he can touch me - but I must not touch him. Well, Ben--- tomorrow is another day! Lyn 2/2/2008 update: For some reason, Ben would like nothing better than to bite me. He tries to chase me out of the room and he is not nice to anyone who comes to visit. But Ben LOVES John! Ben loves only John! and only John could love Ben. The pictures of Ben and John tell the whole story. Maybe in time Ben will learn that other humans are just as kind as his beloved John.
